Fuchsia denticulata

Section Fuchsia. Species.
Known very commonly as F. serratifolia. Long waxy tube light pink-red is horn shaped. Beautiful coloured sepals are pink to light red which turn whitish or light green at the tips. Shaped like narrow triangles which curve inward at the tips. Sepals are divergent, opening almost half way. The orange to scarlet corolla is half visible with shovel shaped petals that fade to purple when dry. Stamens extend below corolla rim with pink to light red filaments and white anthers, pistil extends beyond the stamens, pink to light red style and dull white stigma. Attractive flowers are produced in the leaf axils, very striking with the rare combination of pink, light red, orange, white and green colouring. Flowers are produced both in the spring and autumn but sparse during the summer. Dark green foliage with leaves occurring 3 to 4 per node, occasionally 2 per node.

Native to Peru and Bolivia on the slopes of the Andes, mainly in cloud forest at elevation of 7,200 to 11,500 ft growing as upright shrub to 13 ft or can climb to 32 ft. Young laterals are coloured green to wine-red, the older laterals have tan bark that peels. Grown in most temperate climes and freely available, very easy grower mainly as shrub or pot training, does throw up new shoots from the roots, will withstand lower winter temperatures than most species. Known very commonly as F. serratifolia and also as F. Ieptopoda, F. siphonata and F. taconiiflora. Described by Ruiz and Pavon 1802.
