Fuchsia denticulata
Section Fuchsia. Species.
Known very commonly as F. serratifolia. Long waxy tube light pink-red is
horn shaped. Beautiful coloured sepals are pink to light red which turn
whitish or light green at the tips. Shaped like narrow triangles which curve
inward at the tips. Sepals are divergent, opening almost half way. The orange
to scarlet corolla is half visible with shovel shaped petals that fade to
purple when dry. Stamens extend below corolla rim with pink to light red
filaments and white anthers, pistil extends beyond the stamens, pink to
light red style and dull white stigma. Attractive flowers are produced in
the leaf axils, very striking with the rare combination of pink, light red,
orange, white and green colouring. Flowers are produced both in the spring
and autumn but sparse during the summer. Dark green foliage with leaves
occurring 3 to 4 per node, occasionally 2 per node.
Native to Peru and Bolivia on the slopes of the Andes, mainly in cloud
forest at elevation of 7,200 to 11,500 ft growing as upright shrub to 13
ft or can climb to 32 ft. Young laterals are coloured green to wine-red,
the older laterals have tan bark that peels. Grown in most temperate climes
and freely available, very easy grower mainly as shrub or pot training,
does throw up new shoots from the roots, will withstand lower winter temperatures
than most species. Known very commonly as F. serratifolia and also as F.
Ieptopoda, F. siphonata and F. taconiiflora. Described by Ruiz and Pavon
1802.
